AWARENESS PROGRAMMES
Bharathan Medical Foundation is dedicated to conducting awareness programmes in two very important areas - organ donation and the prevention of kidney and liver disease. Through our impactful awareness programme, we aim to create a positive and lasting change in our society.

SMALL INTESTINE
India is struggling with an acute shortage of organs for donation. There are an estimated 1 million patients who suffer from end-stage organ failure. This number is, unfortunately, rising exponentially due to unhealthy lifestyles and increasing stress levels.
There is also a huge need for Tissue Donation. The tissues required are:
-
Cornea
-
Heart valves
-
Skin
-
Bone marrow
-
Ligament
-
Blood vessels
Every donor can save 8 lives and enhance the lives of 75 more!

Data from NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation), DGHS, Govt. of India (2022)
The approximate number of brain deaths in India is around 1.5 lakhs per year. In 2022, organs were harvested from only 904 cadaver donors, which is only 0.6% of possible donors! If we are able to increase this percentage to a meagre 5% in the next 5 years, there will be so many more patients who will get a new lease of life.
In India more than 5 lakh people die every year due to non- availability of organs.
-
1 person with kidney failure dies every 5 minutes in India putting the death rate at 1.8 lakhs/ year
-
The organ donation rate in India as against some other countries (statistics from 2019)
-
India : 0.65 people per million
-
United Kingdom: 15.5 people per million
-
USA: 21.9 people per million
-
Spain : 35.1 people per million
-

According to the WHO, only around 0.01 percent of people in India donate their organs after death while in Western countries around 70% pledge their organs.

The reason behind such poor performance is lack of public awareness and religious or superstitious beliefs among people.
PREVENTION OF KIDNEY & LIVER FAILURE
The Bharathan Medical Foundation is dedicated to spreading awareness for the prevention of kidney and liver failure. Due to the increase in unhealthy lifestyle, stress and genetics, the number of diabetics and hypertensive patients is rising exponentially in India and it is a cause of great alarm.

Diabetes and hypertension are silent killers as they often go undetected until it has caused serious health problems.

India has become the diabetes capital of the world. There are currently close to 80 million people with diabetes in India and the number is expected to increase to 135 million by 2045. It is estimated that at least one in four adults in India has hypertension but only 12% of them have it under control.

Prevention is better than cure and unfortunately with kidney and liver failure, there is no permanent cure. Hence, it is imperative that people are educated on the importance of taking care of their and their family's health and regularly monitor it before it is too late.

We endeavour to create awareness and equip the public with the knowledge that they need to lead a healthier life and avoid these life threatening illnesses.
